Article One

Article One is an independent eyewear company based in Flint, Michigan. We produce handcrafted eyewear in Italy and sell to boutique optical shops around the country. We are proponents of complete brand transparency, giving credit to craftsmen, supporting small business, giving back to our community, and thoughtful design. Article One frames are handmade in a small village in Northern Italy at the base of the Dolomites. The family-owned factory we work with has 12 craftsman who are experts in what they do. We work to give credit where credit is due by shining a light on the hands that touch each frame. The care put into each frame results in quality you can feel. An integral part of our progression was founder Wes’s decision to move the company from Chicago to Flint, MI. While an unlikely city for a fashion startup, Flint’s community has proved to be inspiring, supportive and resilient. Further, it has proved integral in shaping Article One. We are surrounded by a community of tenacious doers who want to see their neighbors succeed. Article One was founded to raise awareness and funding for Vitamin A deficiency in developing nations. We accomplish this mission by donating a portion of each pair sold to Helen Keller International. Most people are unaware that about 500,000 children globally go blind each year from Vitamin A deficiency, and half of those children die within 12 months as a result of Vitamin A deficiency. Even more astounding, it costs just one dollar for a year’s worth of supplements for one child. That means a one dollar donation to Helen Keller International will ensure at least one child will not die or go blind from vitamin A deficiency. Article One donates $2 from each sale to Helen Keller International, and to date has raised over $12k for the foundation.

The 21st century opened with eyewear designed to dazzle and become an object of desire.Safilo came up with original, sophisticated and refined collections.Attention to detail and passion for design inspired the Safilo Diamonds eyewear embellished with strass crystals, as well as the Safilo Design collection marked by meticulous, contemporary details. This is a story that begins more than forty years ago in a territory in which the production of eyewear is an ancient knowledge and where it is continued ever since in an establishment in which the production of titanium eyewear is a modern art.

This is a typical Italian story, but nowadays it has passed the Agordo Dolomites to be told all around the world.

It all starts with a titanium slab. But not any old titanium, it has to be the purest in the world.

Faced with a slab of titanium most people just see the metal, but we can glimpse the soul of our eyewear. This is why we buy our raw titanium in Japan from certified producers who can guarantee us the purest and most perfect titanium. This may seem a strange choice, but if you want to create the best titanium frames, there can be no compromise on quality.

Not only can we say with pride that every frame is 100% conceived and produced in Italy, but we can also add that what makes a Blackfin frame so special is the way it’s made. It’s the creation of all of us working together, in the same place, always ready to discuss things and help and stimulate each other.

OVVO Optics has been present in the U.S. since March 2011. Its history, however, goes back to Europe of the Cold War era. That’s when a group of scientists, who were working on developing a material for spacecraft and military use, fused surgical steel and titanium, achieving an exceptionally light, durable and flexible material that is also hypoallergenic. Inspired by its remarkable qualities, in 1980 the engineers of the company started using this unique composite to make frames for glasses. They are handmade, but manufactured with outstanding precision, mastered by over 30 years of experience. Entirely produced in Germany and Poland, OVVO frames bring exquisite European style and unmatched quality.

Weighing barely 0.6 ounces OVVO frames offer unparalleled comfort and unfailing durability. Tests showed that stretched flat frames can hold up to 90 pounds without breaking or wrecking. Virtually indestructible and highly flexible is also OVVO Optics-patented screw-free hinge that can withstand more than 300,000 rotations (an equivalent of 205 years of usage) and reveal no changes in structure or appearance.

OVVO Optics’ eyewear is 100% manufactured in family-owned plants in Europe, where each frame goes through 65-85 steps before it is complete. First, using German engineered laser technology the frames are cut out from raw steel sheets imported from Sweden. Then, they pass through the various stages of hand-manufacturing. With great precision and attention to detail the frames are hand-polished, painted, decorated and assembled by a crew of 250 dedicated eyewear production experts. At each phase, they are inspected with care for highest quality assurance.

The end product is a flawless piece of art, sophisticated, comfortable, durable and flexible.

With the wide variety of lens options available, you can customize your “sunnies” (sunglasses) to meet your visual, protection, performance and comfort needs. Sunglasses protect your eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which is present even on cloudy days. Quality sun-wear provides 100 percent UV protection and can significantly reduce the risk of vision problems caused by sunlight such as cataracts and retinal damage.

Glare, an issue that makes it difficult to see objects clearly by washing out colors and details, can be combated by polarized lenses. Looking at a scene with polarized lenses, you’ll notice the colors are deeper, richer and bolder, and details are clearer and more distinct. Polarized lenses also help reduce squinting, which, in turn, reduces eye fatigue, tension and eyestrain.

Anti-Reflective Lenses

Wearers of prescription glasses and sunglasses commonly encounter annoying glare and reflections caused by light bouncing off their lenses. This glare makes it more difficult to see, especially at night. Anti-reflective lenses reduce these reflections allowing more light to pass through to your eyes.

All lens surfaces naturally reflect light and this reflection can prevent between seven to 14 percent of the light needed for optimal vision. Wearing non-AR lenses is like trying to read a book in a dimly lit room. Since AR lenses allow more light to reach your eyes by reducing reflections, it’s like turning up the lights in a room, making it easier to see.
